ok...so being of a possible majority of 18 year olds still obsessed with the Harry Potter books I just finished reading the newest book. It took me 3 days to read. I'm growing more and more sad at the realization that it's almost over. Harry is almost full circle from gangly little boy. And it's been so wierd because it's always coincided with me...so just as Harry is about to be finished with school and our days of the adventures of Harry Potter will come to an end...so will my childhood. It's very sad. But back to the book. The end was so very sad. I could not believe that we lost another, so profound character. This is one of the few times I've ever been so effected by a book. But damn.

lol. the teen years are the best...to me anyway. I'll miss being a "teenager". I mean...the final FUN milestone is 21, when you can drink legally, but i'm not a drinker so that's no good for me. Lord.

and there's less fun in drinking legally anyways

it's less fun doing anything legally. i mean damn. think of how many people smoke when they're teenagers but once they turn 18, when it's legal, they go cold turkey...at least for a few years...lol

Mason, I'm 38 and I love the Potter books. But I get what you're saying -- the timing of the books has been the timing of your youth. I feel that way whenever I read a "Time Quartet" series book by Madeleine L'Engle. I read "Wrinkle in Time" in grade school, and I feel like the Murray-O'Keefe family have aged with me -- Meg and Calvin's daughter had a book of her own a few years back, and it occured to me that I could probably have a kid about her age by now. Not quite the same thing, but still.

How have you weathered hurricane season so far?

oh dear. the hurrican season has been rough on us. Our home, which is on the barrier islands, between Pensacola Beach and Navarre Beach, was lucky enough to be nestled where the brunt of the landfall caught us. It took the upstairs balcony, the deck, the french doors, bay window, and 4 more windows, as well as adding to the structural damage left from Ivan. Oi vae. C'est la vie. This happens to be part of it if we live on the Gulf of Mexico. It's the same threat as many places have with their own. You just have to live with the climate if you love where you live. In California it's earthquakes, some places have tornadoes, some have terrible ice storms, and here we have hurricanes. It's just been tough reality but we've all accepted that it's part of life here and we must continue life as usual.

My father is near Fort Lauderdale, in a mobile home and he's in a wheelchair permanently to boot, so hurricane season worries me more than ever. Sorry to hear about all the damage to the homestead. Good to see you're keeping your spirits up, though.

oh yeah. as i said, it's part of the package. i love my beach and it'd take death to make me leave. lol. it's just my element. i'm more at peace by myself, sitting out by the bay, watching the traffic flow busily over the bridge all leading their lives and reminding me the world is so busy yet the sun dropping slowly over the water beyond the bridge reminds me that there's also serenity through all of the commotion. I kno it's wierd and sentimental, but it's just the place i'm most at peace in this world.

also, i'm very sorry about your father. i truly hope he fares well. sounds like we may be in for a rough hurricane season, which is very sad to all of us.

Your first paragraph painted a great picture, and I can totally understand what you mean. I hope I can see that spot someday. You talk about it the way I talk about the Ridge that runs above our property.
